Vehicle & Guide

Three days from Zanzibar's beach to the most extraordinary birth event in the natural world — and back.

You are in Zanzibar. The Indian Ocean is warm. The sand is white. The spice market is extraordinary. You have, in every important way, arrived.

And three hundred kilometres to the northwest, on the Ndutu plains, the calving season is underway. Eight thousand wildebeest calves born per day. Lion prides and cheetah coalitions following the birth wave. The short-grass plains green and alive and full of a drama that you cannot find anywhere else on earth at any other time of year.

This fly-in package is for the traveller in Zanzibar who discovers — perhaps from another guest at the hotel, or from a chance conversation, or from reading about what is happening on the mainland right now — that they cannot leave Tanzania without seeing it. Three days. A flight of approximately 45 minutes to an hour from Zanzibar to Arusha, then a transfer to the calving grounds. Two full days on the Ndutu plains. Return to Zanzibar on Day 3. Your beach hotel is waiting.

Detailed Itinerary — Day by Day

1
Zanzibar to Ndutu — The Plains Open Before You
B L D

Zanzibar to Ndutu — The Plains Open Before You Morning flight from Zanzibar to Arusha. Your Matrix Safaris guide meets you at Arusha Airport and begins the transfer toward Ndutu — driving south through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, descending from highland forest onto the short-grass plains. The moment the calving grounds appear — flat, impossibly green, covered in wildebeest as far as you can see in every direction — you understand why you made the journey. Afternoon: your first calving game drive. Births, predator pursuits, the extraordinary resilience of new calves in the most dangerous landscape on earth. Overnight at your Ndutu camp.

2
Full Day at Ndutu — The Heart of the Calving Season
B L D

Full Day at Ndutu — The Heart of the Calving Season A full day on the calving plains. Early morning departure before sunrise — the predators are most active at dawn, and the calving activity peaks in the first hours of light. Your guide positions the vehicle at the edge of the herd, where the birthing mothers seek slightly quieter ground. You watch a calf born, stand, and run within minutes of its arrival. You watch a cheetah single out a calf that has become separated from its mother. You watch a lion pride move through the herd without urgency, because on the calving grounds, they do not need to hurry. Picnic lunch in the bush. Afternoon drive. Return to camp as the sun sets over the Ndutu plains and the herds settle for the night around you.

3
Final Dawn Drive & Return to Zanzibar
B L D

Final Dawn Drive & Return to Zanzibar One final game drive before sunrise — because the Ndutu plains at first light are too extraordinary to miss on a departure day. Then drive to Arusha for your flight back to Zanzibar. You land on the island in the afternoon. The Indian Ocean is exactly where you left it, warm and waiting. The other guests at your beach hotel ask you where you were for three days. You tell them about the calving grounds. They do not entirely believe you. This is correct. Some things have to be seen.
