Top Attractions & Highlights

Highlight 01

The Lake Itself

Lake Natron is a highly alkaline lake, known for its striking red and orange hues, which result from the high concentration of sodium carbonate and other minerals in the water. The lake is saline and inhospitable to most animals, but it provides a habitat for large flocks of flamingos, particularly the lesser flamingo, which comes to breed in the shallow waters.

Highlight 02

Flamingo Breeding Grounds

One of the main attractions at Lake Natron is its role as a breeding ground for the lesser flamingo. The lake provides a safe and remote location for these birds to lay their eggs, and from July to October, thousands of flamingos can be seen congregating along the lake’s shores, creating a breathtaking spectacle.

Highlight 03

Mount Oldonyo Lengai

This active volcano, known as the "Mountain of God" to the Maasai, is located just to the south of Lake Natron. It is the only volcano in the world to emit natron (sodium carbonate), and it provides a dramatic backdrop to the lake. For adventurous travelers, Mount Oldonyo Lengai offers hiking opportunities, including the challenging climb to the summit, which rewards climbers with spectacular views. The "Flamingo Pools" : These natural hot springs are located near the lake and are named after the flamingos that bathe in them. The pools are rich in minerals and provide a refreshing spot to cool off. The surrounding landscapes, with volcanic rock formations and hot springs, add to the otherworldly beauty of the area.

Highlight 04

Waterfalls of Engaresero

Located on the eastern side of Lake Natron, the Engaresero waterfalls are a hidden gem in the area. The waterfalls cascade down volcanic cliffs into a serene pool, providing an ideal spot for a cool dip in a secluded and peaceful environment.
