Six days following the herd columns as they march north through the beating heart of the Serengeti.
Picture yourself standing on a ridge in the central Serengeti in May. Below you, on the plains, a column of wildebeest is moving north. The column is not a hundred animals wide. It is not a thousand. It stretches across the valley floor in a dark, living mass that your eye cannot measure — a river of life that has no beginning you can see and no end on the horizon. The sound is like distant thunder that does not stop. The dust is a permanent haze above them.
Most safari travellers focus on either the calving season in the south or the river crossings in the north. The central Serengeti migration — the movement phase — is the one they miss. And yet the sight of hundreds of thousands of animals moving in coordinated columns through the Seronera Valley, with the Grumeti River's crocodile-filled preview crossing building toward the full drama of July, is one of the most cinematically extraordinary things that happens anywhere on this planet.
The Great March combines three days in the Central Serengeti with two days in Tarangire — where the elephant herds are at their most spectacular as the dry season begins — and a half-day at the Ngorongoro Crater for the Big Five encounter.
Arrive Arusha — Tarangire Tomorrow Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport. Transfer to your Arusha lodge. This evening, your guide briefs you on the current position of the Migration — where the herds are today, how fast they are moving, and what the Seronera Valley looks like right now. You are not just booking a safari. You are joining a movement that began four months ago on the Ndutu plains and is building toward its greatest drama. Tonight you rest. Tomorrow the elephant kingdom.
Tarangire National Park — The Elephant Kingdom Awaits Drive south to Tarangire National Park. April and May are the transition months — the rains are ending, the grass is still long and green, and the elephant herds that have dispersed during the wet season are beginning to concentrate again around the Tarangire River. The baobab trees are in their full green flush. The light through the woodland is extraordinary. Afternoon game drive along the river — elephants, buffalo, giraffe, and the big cats that follow the concentrations. First night at your lodge near the park.
Full Day in Tarangire — Then North to the Serengeti A full morning in Tarangire before the afternoon drive toward the Serengeti. The afternoon crossing of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area gives you the first view of the open plains — and already, driving through the conservation area, you begin to see the leading edge of the herd columns: small groups of wildebeest moving with purpose, heading north, pulled by an instinct so deeply embedded in their biology that nothing has interrupted it in millions of years. You arrive at your Central Serengeti camp as the day ends. The sound of the herds is audible in the distance.
Central Serengeti — The Column Day This is the day that defines this package. A full day following the migration columns through the Seronera Valley — the heart of the Serengeti, where the river provides water and the kopjes provide lookout points for the predators that travel alongside the herds. The scale of the movement today is something that photographs prepare you for in the same way that a photograph of the ocean prepares you for standing at its edge: not at all, and entirely. Your guide positions you at the best vantage points, at the right time of day, in exactly the right place. Picnic lunch in the bush. Afternoon drive following the column's leading edge.
Grumeti River — The Preview of the Great Crossing In June, the Migration reaches the Grumeti River — the first major water crossing of the northward journey. The Grumeti is smaller than the Mara River, but its crocodiles are legendary: some of the largest Nile crocodiles in Africa, resident and waiting. A crossing at the Grumeti is a preview of what happens in the north in July — and it is extraordinary in its own right. Full day in the northern Central Serengeti, positioning for Grumeti crossings and following the herd columns as they mass at the riverbank. Your guide knows the crossing points and can position the vehicle for the best sighting angle.
Ngorongoro Crater & Departure — The Big Five Finale Early departure from the Serengeti for the drive to Ngorongoro. Dawn descent into the crater — arriving before the other vehicles, in the cold and the mist, for a morning that encompasses lions, hippos, black rhino, and flamingos on the soda lake. The Ngorongoro Crater gives you the Big Five in a self-contained world where every animal species is resident and year-round. Late morning ascent and drive to Kilimanjaro Airport for your departure. Six days. The Great March, the Grumeti preview, and the crater. Tanzania at the peak of its green and moving season.
