Three nights on the Rufiji River — the most extraordinary boat safari in Africa, just 40 minutes from Zanzibar by air.
Nyerere National Park — formerly the Selous, and one of the largest game reserves in Africa — sits closer to Zanzibar than any northern park. The flight from Zanzibar to Nyerere's airstrip takes approximately 40 minutes. You arrive at a world that feels genuinely remote, genuinely wild, and genuinely different from anything the northern circuit can give you.
What makes Nyerere extraordinary for fly-in travellers from Zanzibar is a single word: water. The Rufiji River runs through the park, and the boat safari that this enables — hippos on the banks, crocodiles in the shallows, fish eagles calling from the fever trees, elephant families drinking at the water's edge as the sun lowers — is one of the most romantically distinctive wildlife experiences in Africa. You cannot do this in the Serengeti. You cannot do it in Tarangire. You can do it here, and you can be back in Zanzibar by Day 5.
The River Safari is our recommendation for travellers who have already seen the northern circuit, or who want something nobody in their social circle has done. This is the path less taken — and it is remarkable.
Zanzibar to Nyerere — The River World Begins A 40-minute flight from Zanzibar lands you at a small grass airstrip in Nyerere National Park. The contrast with Zanzibar is immediate and total: no ocean, no sand, but a vast, green, riverine wilderness alive with the sounds of an ecosystem in constant motion. Your guide meets you at the strip and transfers you to your riverside camp. After settling in, your first activity: an afternoon boat safari on the Rufiji River. The river in the late afternoon is something you were not prepared for — crocodiles on the sandy banks, hippos surfacing every few minutes, African fish eagles launching from the trees above, and the reflections of a golden sky in the water below.
Dawn Walking Safari — Inside the Ecosystem Mornings in Nyerere are for walking. This is one of the few parks in Tanzania where walking safaris are genuinely available in the wilderness, not on a fenced trail. Your armed ranger and guide take you out at dawn — into a landscape that looks entirely different on foot than from a vehicle. You are inside the food chain, not above it. Your guide reads the ground: a lion passed here before first light, the grass tells you which way the wind turned, the birds above are relaying information about the whole savannah in real time. Afternoon: game drive through the open woodland, then a second boat safari as the day cools and the river comes alive again.
Full Day on the River and in the Bush — The Best of Nyerere Today you have the full freedom of Nyerere. Morning game drive — this park has exceptional wild dog populations, large lion prides, elephant herds, giraffe, and some of the finest birdlife in Tanzania. Afternoon: a longer boat safari, exploring upriver through channels and inlets where the Rufiji spreads into a complex of lakes, islands, and wildlife corridors that most visitors never reach. Your guide has a favourite spot — a bend in the river where the hippo pool contains 40 animals and the trees behind are full of yellow-billed storks. This evening: dinner at the riverside camp, lanterns on the table, the sound of hippos in the dark below.
Final Morning in Nyerere & Return to Zanzibar One last game drive at first light — because Nyerere in the morning is too good to skip, even on a departure day. Then transfer to the airstrip for your flight back to Zanzibar. The flight takes 40 minutes. You land back on the island having experienced a Tanzania that most of the travellers around you on the beach have never seen — a river world, a walking world, a world of boat safaris and crocodiles and the extraordinary quiet of an African dawn on the Rufiji. The ocean is warm. The dhows are sailing. You are back.
