Best Time to Visit Tanzania
Tanzania is a year-round safari destination, but each season changes the feeling of the trip. The dry months bring classic wildlife visibility and easier road conditions, while the green season brings dramatic skies, migratory birds, calving in the southern Serengeti and excellent value.
What Matters Most
June to October is the safest all-round wildlife window.
January to March is excellent for calving, birds and green-season photography.
April and May suit flexible travelers looking for quieter lodges and better value.
The best month depends on the exact route, budget and wildlife priority.
Planning Notes
Dry Season: June to October
This is the most popular safari window, with thinner vegetation, clearer wildlife viewing and comfortable conditions in the Serengeti, Tarangire and Ngorongoro. July to September can also align with northern Serengeti river-crossing season.
Green Season: November to March
Short rains refresh the landscape, migrant birds arrive and January to March is excellent for southern Serengeti and Ndutu calving season. It is also a strong period for photography, with softer light and fewer crowds.
Long Rains: April to May
This is the quietest period. Some remote camps may close and roads can be muddy, but flexible travelers can find excellent lodge value and relaxed safari experiences.
Best Timing by Experience
Great Migration calving is strongest January to March; river-crossing safaris are usually planned July to September; Kilimanjaro climbs are often best January to March or June to October; Zanzibar is strongest June to March outside the wettest weeks.
